PRN / Days
You Will Be Responsible For:
Assists in answering call light in a prompt and courteous manner referring message to appropriate nurse or taking care of patient's need with no documented concerns.
Takes and records vital signs at specified intervals reporting abnormalities to licensed nurse, according to procedure.
Administers bath and basic hygiene measures (bath, mouth care, denture care, hair care/shampoo, dressing, shaving, perineal care, catheter care, skin care) to patients and bed linen changes as needed according to procedure with no unjustified variances per year as documented by patient complaints and/or observation by charge nurse, director, supervisor and/or peers.
Weighs patients daily, as assigned, using appropriate scales. Records weight in electronic medical record with no more than three variances per year.
Assists patients with use of bed pan, urinal, bedside commode or ambulation to bathroom followed by personal hygiene according to procedure.
Assists with turning, lifting, walking, transporting patients according to procedure as observed by charge nurse, director, and peers.
Measures and observes for color, consistency, odor and other characteristics of urine from voiding or foley catheters, emesis, nasogastric suction and stool, reporting amount and findings to licensed nurse with no variances as observed by case manager and/or peers.
Obtains point of care blood glucose results in timely manner using appropriate equipment. Reports results to patient’s nurse.
What You Will Need:
Senior or final year from graduation from an accredited school of nursing or three years in BSN Program.
Medical terminology preferred
The Nurse Extern performs specified patient care for a designated time frame, functioning under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse, in compliance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act, to assist in providing quality care consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the nursing department and hospital administration. Must be able to communicate with doctors, patients, staff, other nurses and medical personnel. Must be able to function independently and efficiently as a member of the hospital team.
